Chesterton, along with two other towns, make up the Duneland area, named after the Indiana Dunes National Park. The town was first settled under the name Coffee Creek in the early 1830’s, then was changed to Calumet after the introduction of its post office in 1850, and finally was changed to Chesterton in 1870.
