New Carlisle, Indiana, is a small suburban town located in St. Joseph County, and is part of the South Bend-Mishawaka Metropolitan Statistical Area. The total area of the town is only slightly more than 2 square miles, and the town's population in 2010 was under 2,000 people. The town was originally called Bourissa hills, named after the original owner of the land, Lazarus Bourissa. It was then changed to New Carlisle after Richard Risley Carlisle in 1835. The town's historic post office has been in operation since 1837.
